Abstract
Since intravenous thrombolytic therapy was established as a standard therapy in the management of acute myocardial infarction(AMI), an early diagnosis of AMI calls more attention than ever. We examined the diagnostic usefulness of the serum
myoglobin
using latex agglutination(Rapi Tex(r) Myoglobin; Beringer, Germany) as an emergency screening test which took less than 5 minutes to obtain the results. Twenty three patients with AMI and 6 subjects without AMI as controls were studied. All the
patients
arrived at the emergency room within 6 hours from the onset of chest pain. Fifteen out of 23 patients and 3 out of 6 controls were positive; 8 out of 23 patients and 3 out to 6 controls negative. The sensitivity of the assay was 74% and
specificity
27%.
The predictive value of the positive response was 83% and the predictive value of the negative response 27%. We concluded that the serum myoglobin assay using latex agglutination was useful as an emergency screening test for the early diagnosis
of
AMI.
It was easy to handle, quick to get the results and reliable as an emergency screening test.
